Or rather, stacks it. WAM Architecten's kitschy addition to Holland's northern town of Zaandam is bound to cause a stir, with its figurative and literal representation of local housing traditions in the form of stacked wooden houses typical to the region of Zaan. Designed as a 'home from home', the hotel building agglomerates 70 individual characteristic green and blue houses--ranging from a notary’s residence to a worker’s cottage--within the main body of the 12-floor structure constructed of timber and Eternit fibre cement cladding, due to open this April. So far, some think it's brilliant, others have called it an unfortunate architectural Disneyfication of Dutch culture that might just go from wham to whammy once the surprise factor wears off.
