Urban Repair With Lego

German artist Jan Vormann jumpstarted an international movement when he began filling up the WWII scars of buildings with colorful Lego patches. Having intervened in a number of cities around the world during his travels, including a recent action in New York, he's had to introduce a new section on the Dispatchwork website to accommodate the worldwide dispatchers that have actively joined in on the fun. (Pictured above: Sabine, north of Rome, Italy)

"I want to 'repair' every broken wall in the whole world with Dispatchwork. Why not? I think it is a fun approach towards conceiving the decay that time brings along. Life is serious, so that makes playing sometimes even more important.”

And that is where the beauty of this public art project truly resides. Playing on the irresistable association between Lego and architecture, it celebrates culture and spontaneity, urban awareness and civil activism.  It's humor reminds me of Toronto's Urban Repair Squad, while its format is more akin to Space Invaders. Subtle treasures and explosions of fun just waiting to be discovered by streetwalkers.
